In Chinese, “tzu” means compassion, and “chi” means relief. The Tzu Chi Foundation is an international humanitarian organization whose mission is to relieve the suffering of those in need, and create a better world for us all. The Tzu Chi Foundation have been our long-time sponsors of the Wednesday Night Meal on the first Wednesday of each month. The volunteers arrive early on Wednesday morning, bringing fresh organic vegetables, and prep all of their contributions so that in the evening they can cook a fresh, completely vegetarian meal for our Wednesday night guests.
Founded on Buddhist philosophy, Tzu Chi advocates the view that as individuals, we should aspire to be moral, self-aware, and willing to act for the benefit of others. Tzu Chi is dedicated to fostering humanistic culture through civil responsibility and personal character.
To further their philosophy of acting for the benefit of others and to further personal growth, the Tzu Chi volunteers offered our Wednesday night guests an opportunity for our guests to help each other. Tzu Chi promised that, if any of our Wednesday night guests felt inspired to make a contribution, no matter how small, towards the Wednesday Night Meal, the Foundation would offer matching funds. Much like the widow with only two coins (Mark 12:41-44), our guests to date have raised $122.30, for a matching fund total of $244.60, by passing the hat for any “spare” change that they were inspired to contribute.
We are grateful for the ministry of the Tzu Chi Foundation, who have been tireless partners in our ongoing mission to serve our unhoused and underprivileged community members.
