Today we spend time in the Gospel of John with the first of seven “signs” that Jesus performs or offers, each one giving us a glimpse into his true identity and mission. This first sign is the account of Jesus turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana. Like all of the other signs, this could be considered a miracle but it is certainly not a miracle for the sake of itself. Just as the word “sign” infers, these miracles are intended to point us toward something else. What is the purpose of this unusual miracle? Why start this series of seven signs with something that seems rather frivolous…keeping the party going by turning water into wine?
