Our scripture reading today tells of the encounter between Jesus and the Canaanite woman. It’s about the walls and boundaries that separated people in that day and age, and how the Canaanite woman, a mother, crossed those boundaries in bold ways in order to save her child. This is a difficult passage, rivaled by its beauty: Jesus initially sends the woman away, but her persistence causes him to grow and change.
Join us as we wrestle with this text, exploring the response of Jesus and the disciples to this desperate mother. Let us open our minds and hearts to the voices challenging us to expand our understanding of God’s mercy and to whom it belongs.
