First Things First

First Things First

Our Gospel reading for this Sunday contains some challenging words from Jesus. As he turns toward Jerusalem, would-be followers contemplate if they want to be “in” or “out” of this life of discipleship. “Follow me,” Jesus says. And then he goes on to highlight the reality that it’s not an easy path.  In today’s passage, Jesus insists on absolute commitment and focus from those who “follow.”  I’m sure the folks of that day wondered if they were up to the challenge. I know there are many a day I wonder that same thing myself! It’s a challenging passage that gives us the opportunity to reflect on what it means for us to “follow Jesus,” how that takes shape in unique ways in each of our lives and how we can live and grow into discipleship our whole lives long.
