Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?

This Sunday is World Communion Sunday, a day when we are especially mindful of our connection with Christians around the world. Christians of every culture, color, and language will be gathering around tables to receive wafer and wine, bread and juice…elements that connect us in profound and life giving ways to the grace of God and to one another.

Our passage for this special Sunday draws us into the world of the chief tax collector, Zacchaeus. Eager to see Jesus but short in stature, he climbed a tree to catch a glimpse of this traveling preacher, healer and prophet. Jesus surprised him with a request…to follow him home and break bread, together, at his table. Is Jesus still in the habit of inviting himself over for dinner? How might we respond to such an invitation? And how would our response shape our ability and desire to gather at Christ’s table with siblings near and far, like us and very different?

Scripture passages: Luke 19:1-10
